미 FDA, 18년만에 알츠하이머병 신약 승인…효능 논란 계속될 듯
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved the first new medication for Alzheimer's in almost two decades.
The drug, known as Aduhelm, has been developed by Biogen.
It is the first drug that U.S. regulators say can possibly treat the underlying disease, rather than just manage symptoms.
The decision comes despite warnings from independent advisors that there was not enough evidence that the drug can help patients.
Acknowledging the fierce debate around the drug,... the FDA said the benefits of the treatment outweighed the risks.
The approval was given under the condition that a follow-up study be conducted.
If it fails to prove effectiveness,... the drug can be pulled from the market.
