Wallasey Golf Club has been welcoming golfers to its classic English Links since 1891.
As an England Golf Championship venue, maintaining the highest standards is part of the clubs DNA.
But when a series of their environmentally sensitive sand dunes needed reseeding, they looked to the future, rather than their illustrious past, for a method that would minimise the impact on the course, its players and the dunes themselves.
Peter Johnson, a member of the club since the late 1960’s, is also amongst the first drone pilots in the UK to be qualified as a spreading and spraying operator, having recently been trained on AutoSpray’s course at Harper Adams University.
He suggested that reseeding by drone would be an efficient and sensitive approach, so on a bright morning in May, he and his business partner Kevin Gornall, set up their big, XAG P40 spreading drone under the watchful eye of course manager John McLoughlin and set about reseeding and fertilising the sand dunes by drone.
Within a couple of hours 80 kilos of dune specific grass and appropriate fertiliser had been applied and play was able to resume.
John inspected the treated areas and was delighted with the coverage and impressed with speed and simplicity of the whole process.
A job that would have traditionally interrupted the golfers for a couple of days, had been wrapped up by 10.00am.
It looks like the team from QuadRotor.co.uk will be spending more time on golf courses across the UK but sadly, it may not improve their handicap.
As I drove back along the M56, it’s was satisfying to think of such an historic club, using the very latest techniques to maintain high standards.
Great job Quad Rotor!
