Flea beetles are destructive leaf-feeding pests that pose a threat to gardens and ornamental landscapes. These pests aren’t actually fleas; they just jump away like fleas when disturbed. While they don't harm humans or animals directly, they can spread the bacterium, Erwinia stewartii, and cause blight or wilting.
Flea beetles are small, shiny beetles that grow to be about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch in length. These insects can vary in color, those colors including bronze, blue, brown, and metallic grey, and some may even have stripes. Flea beetles have large hind legs that they use to jump, hence the name. Flea beetle larvae are white, worm-like pests with dark brown heads.
Flea beetles may be found throughout the United States and are known to feed on the leaves of vegetables, on ornamental plants like trees and shrubs, and on weeds. Depending on the species, the larvae may be found feeding on the roots underneath the soil or on the leaves of the plant. When the temperatures become cooler, flea beetles will overwinter in leaf litter, hedgerows, underneath the soil, and in wooded areas.
Flea beetles will start to emerge when the temperatures warm for spring. The adults will feed on the upper surfaces of plant leaves and leave a shot-hole pattern. The larvae of some species will create a skeletal leaf pattern instead.
Before making your application, clean up your yard and remove plant debris to reduce food and habitats for flea beetles on your property. Rake away fallen leaf litter, pick up twigs, bark, and other debris from the ground, and prune away overgrown tree branches and shrubs.
To get rid of flea beetles and prevent them from living on your lawn, we recommend you use a residual, repelling insecticide like Supreme I/T.
Supreme I/T is a liquid insecticide concentrate made with bifenthrin, so it’s labeled to control a wide variety of insects. When applied, it leaves a residual effect that will repel pests and control treated areas for up to 90 days.
Mix 0.25 to 0.5 fluid ounces of product into 1 gallon of water to treat over 1,000 square feet. Broadcast the solution evenly over your lawn, and apply it over any ornamentals on your property. Allow the product to dry completely. DO NOT apply this solution to plants grown for consumption.
The barrier will work to repel insects from treated areas, and insects that do make contact with the spray or its residual will have their nervous systems impacted and will die in hours.
