Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Program) is the organization that crash-tests new cars. It uses a star rating to assess the safety of new models, but it also gives separate ratings for adult protection, child protection, vulnerable road-user protection, and safety assist systems. By averaging these ratings you can see which cars are the safest overall.

To date, only five cars have been awarded five-star safety ratings by Euro NCAP in 2021. In June 2020, Euro NCAP updated its crash tests to be even more rigorous. A new test simulates a head-on crash into another car and assesses how well the test car insulates occupants of both vehicles.

Another new test simulates a side impact on the passenger side and measures the potential for front-seat occupants to collide with the driver and cause injury. It also revamped how it tests the effectiveness of automatic emergency braking systems and systems that monitor how alert a driver is, while another new assessment takes ‘post-crash safety into account. This tests the car’s emergency call systems, how easy it is to extract a casualty from the car, and the quality of information available to help emergency services who arrive on the scene.
