Following his departure this morning, the former chancellor has claimed he had no option but to quit after Boris Johnson demanded that he accept a merger of Treasury and Downing Street advisers.
Speaking outside his home this afternoon, Sajid Javid said: "It's been a huge honour to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and whilst I was very pleased that the Prime Minister wanted to reappoint me, I was unable to accept the conditions that he had attached.
"I felt I was left with no option other than to resign. My successor has my full support and the Prime Minister continues to enjoy my full support as does the Government."
