Chinese economic and military might has increased rapidly in the Indo-pacific region, particularly in the South China Sea. In response to China's assertiveness, a strategic security dialogue took shape in 2007 with a vision of a free and open Indo Pacific. It is known as the Quadrilateral Security dialogue - QUAD, in short. This inter-governmental security forum comprises four democracies - Australia, India, Japan, and the US. The spirit of QUAD consists of a shared vision for peace, stability, and rules-based maritime order. QUAD is a diplomatic and military arrangement that aims for power balancing and maintaining status quo in the region. China has termed QUAD as "Asian NATO". However, QUAD isn't a formal alliance. Unlike NATO, there is no legal commitment to come to each other’s aid in the case of a conflict.
