In 2024, several significant tsunamis occurred, triggered by major earthquakes, the most notable of which struck the Noto Peninsula in Japan. This powerful tremor, with a magnitude of 7.6, generated a tsunami recorded off the coasts of Japan, Russia, Sakhalin, and Korea. In some areas, wave heights reached up to 1.4 meters. The main damage from the earthquake and tsunami was reported in Ishikawa Prefecture, where the destruction affected infrastructure, including homes, roads, and ports, and left around 780 people isolated in remote villages. The total damage was estimated at approximately 17.6 billion USD. More than 400 people lost their lives in the disaster, with some fatalities directly related to the tsunami and others resulting from structural collapse and subsequent landslides.

The impact of the tsunami was also felt beyond Japan; however, in certain regions such as Vladivostok, Nakhodka, and parts of Sakhalin, the tsunami caused minimal effects and resulted in only minor destruction.

This incident became one of the most serious tsunami-related events in 2024, drawing attention to the need for improved seismic protection in vulnerable areas, particularly for traditional wooden architecture prone to destruction in such disasters.
