The story of Delhi as the capital of india begins in late 12th century when Turk and Afghan Muslim invaders conquered North India. Earlier in the 11th century Delhi was ruled by Hindu kings of Tomar and Chauhan Dynasty. And this was the time when Delhi emerged as an important political center.
Later in 13th century Muslim invaders took over North India. After this Delhi was ruled by the Sultans of Delhi Sultanat for more than 300 years.
The Delhi Sultanat is the name given to a series of five successive dynasties that ruled over a large part of the Indian subcontinent with Delhi as their capital.
The Delhi Sultanat came to an end in 1526 when Babur defeated the last Sultan of Delhi Sultanat Ibrahim Lodi.
