Brazil and Mexico both have nuclear energy but when it comes to nuclear power production, Argentina is Latin America’s leader. It already has three nuclear plants and plans to start construction on two new reactors next year.
Argentina also has the distinction of being the only country in the region capable of designing, producing and exporting nuclear power to the world.
The two soon-to-be-built reactors represent a 15 billion dollar investment that will increase the country’s long-term energy security.
Nuclear energy offers sustainable and low carbon-energy production. Advocates claim it also aids in the effort to slow climate change. But major accidents in past decades have divided international opinion.
Americas Now correspondent Joel Richards traces the history and the debate surrounding nuclear energy in Argentina.
