Rostock is a northern German independent city , Hanseatic and university city on the Baltic Sea . It is located in the Mecklenburg. With 208,400 inhabitants , it is the most populous city in Mecklenburg and the only major city to be one of the four regional centers in the state. The city of Rostock bears the designation Hanseatic and University City.
The urban area extends around 16 kilometers on both sides of the Warnow to its mouth in the Baltic Sea in the district of Warnemünde. Downtown is on the left bank of the river.
