Playing a guitar solo in just one position, as opposed to several, makes for a very different sound. In this lesson, I’m going to help you better understand one of the easiest ways to think about using notes across the neck.

It involves the fact that we have four fingers and they work across four positions each covering a 4-fret range. This concept is what I call the “444,” scale method, and it works wonders for building unique sounding guitar solos.

We can use this method to learn scales for an along the neck approach. This allows for a melody or solo to function across the whole fret-board, rather than only one position. To help you learn this technique, I’ve created a simple system that anyone can use to learn the positions, play scales in them and use the four positions along the neck to create killer guitar solos or melody lines.

Before we get started with this; “4-finger, 4-fret, 4-position” guitar neck system, you need to understand something. Even though the ways that a guitar player might play a scale and the scales that they like to use may be different, there is one thing that always stays the same.

We have 4-fingers on our fret-hand which establish a 4-fret position. If you ever hope to play along the neck fluently, you need a system like this. I’ll, start the lesson with an overview of how you can learn the 4-fret layout, and then I will take it along the neck.
