They claim that Ethiopia has embarked on the extermination of the Eritrean civilian population after failing to beat nationalist fighters militarily. The claim was made in Rome on Tuesday (28 February) by Habte Giorgis Abraha at a press conference in Rome. Abraha denied Ethiopian claims that Iraqi and Iranian troops have been fighting alongside the Eritreans, who have been fighting for independence for 16 years. Another Eritrean spokesman amplified on what he saw as Israel's interest in the horn conflict and on "continued Western support for Ethiopia's army."
