PARIS — At least eight people were killed after a large blaze broke out in a private apartment building in the French capital on Wednesday morning, in one of the city's deadliest fires within the last decade.
The fire, which took 100 firefighters three hours to control is believed to have been an act of arson. Criminal prosecutors are investigating the cause of the fire.
A small fire in the apartment building's letterbox first brought firefighters to the scene at Rue Myrha street at around 2:23 a.m. Later that same morning at 4:30 a.m., a witness saw a car parked in front of the building with several men inside. A second fire broke out on the building's ground floor and made its way to the stairwell and the upper floors.
Six people including two children died of asphyxiation on the building's third and fifth floors. Two others died after jumping from the building to escape the fire.
Fifteen other buildings in the area have been affected by the blaze.
Police have arrested a 36-year-old man believed to be the arsonist based on CCTV footage. He was found carrying a candle and lighter while running away from the scene.
