Iranians celebrate the victory of moderate Hassan Rohani in the Islamic Republic's presidential elections. 06/16/2013
Hassan Rohani's election as Iran's new president, backed by both moderates and reformists, gives a shot in the arm to a reform movement long sidelined by regime pressure."The slow death of reformists in Iranian politics has been partly halted by this very clear victory for Mr Rohani," said leading conservative analyst Amir Mohebian.
Moderate cleric Hassan Rohani was declared the winner of the 2013 Iranian presidential election on Saturday with just over 50% of the vote, avoiding the need for a runoff and offering the prospect of a less pugnacious management style. Rohani secured 50.6 percent with 18.6 million votes -- three times ahead of the runner-up, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
