STORYLINE
A suicide driver detonated a car bomb near an Iraqi National Guard checkpoint south of Samarra on Saturday, killing four guardsmen and injuring six others, police said.
Iraqi National Guardsman Bahjat Abed said a person "a white Oldsmobile" attacked the checkpoint.
The attack happened in Ishaqi, 10 kilometres (6 miles) south of Samarra.
No further details were immediately available. Samarra is about 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of Baghdad.
It was the third suicide car-bombing in the Samarra area this week.
In a separate incident on Saturday two Iraqi National Guards were killed and another six were injured when a land mine exploded as their convoy passed by in northern Samara, police said.
The road is often taken by Iraqi military convoys en route to their base in Samarra, about 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of Baghdad.
US and Iraqi forces seized control of Samarra last month and Iraqi officials had pointed to the city as an example of how the Americans and the Baghdad government can restore order in restive towns and cities from the insurgents.
