During a colostomy, a surgeon creates an opening, called a stoma, in the abdominal wall to allow waste to exit the body. A colostomy bag attaches to the stoma to collect the waste. 

There are different types of colostomy bags and equipment, including: 

One-piece pouch: The bag and flange are attached together and the entire appliance is removed when full

Two-piece pouch: The bag and flange are separate but can be connected. The flange can be left on the skin for several days

Closed bags: May need to be changed 1–3 times per day

Drainable bags: May need to be replaced every 2–3 days

Change the bag when it's about one-third full to prevent leakage and skin irritation

Choose a time to change the bag when digestive movement has slowed down, like early morning or at least an hour after a meal
