Covert Family Farms was established in 1959 on 650 acres at the base of McIntyre Bluff to raise cattle and pigs and grow tomatoes, onions, corn, melons and table grapes. In 2018, after more than a decade of organic production, Shelly and Gene Covert fully implement regenerative farming practices of minimal soil disturbance, keeping the soil covered, multi-species cover crops, diverse crop rotations and integrated livestock to ensure future generations have an ever-improving environment. They experiment with cover cropping both as a test site for the Summerland Research and Development Centre’s research and also for their own diversity research.
