‘유엔의 날’ 국제질서 위한 UN의 중요성과 비상임이사국 한국 활동 평가는?
Welcome to Within The Frame, where we delve into the most up-to-date stories across the globe. I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
Today is United Nations Day, a day to commemorate the official creation of the United Nations on October 24th, 1945.
It's a significant occasion that highlights the vital role the UN plays in fostering international cooperation, peace, and security.
Since its establishment, the organization has been at the forefront of addressing global challenges, from conflict resolution to humanitarian aid.
On this day, we reflect on the UN's accomplishments and the ongoing need for multilateral diplomacy in an increasingly interconnected world.
To gain deeper insights into these themes, we are joined by Oh Joon, the former South Korean ambassador to the UN.
Welcome to the program Ambassador Oh.
We're also joined by Andrea Ruggeri, Professor of Political Science at the University of Milan.
Great to have you, Professor.
1. (Oh Joon) Ambassador Oh, let's begin with the role of the UN. Since its establishment in 1945, what role has the UN played in international affairs? Also, could you remind us of the importance of multilateral diplomacy in resolving regional conflicts?
2. (Ruggeri) Since January of this year, South Korea has been serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Professor Ruggeri, what are the responsibilities of a non-permanent member?
Additionally, why has the presence of non-permanent members been increasingly significant recently?
3. (Oh Joon) Ambassador Oh, then as a non-permanent member of the Security Council this year, do you believe South Korea has actively raised awareness of the seriousness of security issues in the Korean Peninsula in the international arena? How would you assess the effort?
4. (Oh Joon) During your tenure as South Korea's ambassador to the UN, South Korea was also a non-permanent member of the Security Council. How much do you think a country’s involvement in discussions related to its own domestic issues garner the interest of Security Council members?
5. (Oh Joon) Japan's term as a non-permanent member ends this year. With South Korea, the U.S., and Japan all participating in the Security Council, ambassador, how effective do you believe trilateral cooperation targeting North Korea has been?
6. (Ruggeri) Professor Ruggeri, currently, the Security Council faces challenges such as conflicts among permanent members as well as polarization. What do you think are the most urgent issues the UN will need to address moving forward?
7. (Ruggeri) Given current global instability, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, war in the Middle East, and rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, how do you view the UN's role in these situations professor?
8. (Ruggeri) In what ways can the UN improve its effectiveness in peacekeeping operations in conflict zones?
9. (Oh Joon) As we've mentioned, South Korea's term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council lasts until next year.
Ambassador, what additional efforts do you think South Korea needs to undertake to expand its influence within the UN and the international community?
11. (Ruggeri) Looking ahead, what reforms do you believe are necessary for the UN to remain relevant in the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape?
Alright, we'll have to conclude our discussion here, Ambassador Oh and Professor Ruggeri, thank you so much for your time and your insights on this very special day. We appreciate it.
