The Ethiopian Civil War and the Ogaden War were two crises in the Horn of Africa that linked to the Cold War. After Haile Selassie was overthrown, Mengistu started his Marxist-Leninist regime based upon terror (the Ethiopian Red Terror). In this time period, Somalia were also keen to win back Ogaden. They were supported by the US whilst the Soviets switched allegiance and supported the Ethiopians.
