First excavated in the 1980s, Gevra Coal Mine in central India has grown to be the world’s second-largest open cast mine. It covers about 15 square miles (40 square km) and is part of the Korba Coalfield, a region responsible for 17% of India’s coal production. More than 2,000 people from several villages have been displaced by the mine’s growth.
