A crucial part of surviving your adventures is knowing how to navigate when the weather closes in. How do you avoid getting lost when you can't make out features or landmarks? When we're enclosed by fog, snowstorms or caught off guard by the earlier and darker nights through winter.
We met with Trev and Dave from Edale Mountain Rescue Team to get their top tips for navigating in poor visibility.
The 5 Steps
- Setting the Map
- Leapfrogging
- "The Five D's"
- Headtorch Tips
It's worth noting that this video ended in a stark reminder of how important these tips really are. Filming was cut short after Trev received a call about two people lost up on the Kinder plateau, darkness drew in and before they knew it they didn't know where they were, in which direction they needed to go or where the dangers were hiding.
