Welcome to day 3 of potassium & PKD. So today, we are going to talk about potassium and cover things you can do to take action about potassium and what that means for you if you have Polycystic Kidney Disease
0:00 3 Action Steps To Control High Potassium Levels
In this video, I will share with you 3 action steps that you can follow to control high potassium levels in the blood very quickly and easily. These tips or steps will help you to lower your potassium level in the blood quickly. So, these 3 things are as follow:
0:37 Know you Labs
The number one thing is that you need to know your last couple of labs so that you know if you need a restriction or not. You need to know what your trends are with potassium. So, if you haven’t checked your potassium recently, that would be a good number to know.
2:14 Liberalize Potassium in your Diet
Liberalize potassium if there is no reason to restrict and notice what happens to subsequent lab values. Add in one or two higher potassium foods at a time. A gradual approach is best.
3:17 Track your Foods
If you need to be careful on potassium levels, then track your foods (Try Cronometer.com - it's the tracker we use!) and have a dietitian (like us!) help you find which foods may be bumping up your potassium or if there are non-dietary causes of your high potassium (like medications).
5:28 How To Lower Potassium Level - Summary
3 things that you can do to take action today to control your potassium levels. Number one, know your labs, know your potassium levels, know what they are at, and know if you actually need a potassium restriction or not. Number two, if you don’t need a potassium restriction then liberalize your diet. The third thing that you can do is if you are worried about your levels and you need to get them down is to track your food. We use a chronometer for that. You can also use that or have a dietitian review it with you.
