Blastoise is the only starter Pokémon whose Mega Evolution isn’t a dual-type. In my opinion, they should’ve given him the steel type.

There’s an early concept art that resembles Blastoise without his iconic water canons. This scrapped Pokemon was named Karabajio, which may be a reference to Italian painter Caravaggio, in combination with the word carapace (a shell)

Speaking of his cannons, they may have been inspired by siphons, which are functional tubes that many shellfish use for eating and traveling. For example, the razor clam is known for shooting water out of its exhale siphon in order to burrow beneath the sand.

This may also explain why Blastoise is in the shellfish category, along with Kabuto and Kabutops. Because turtles are definitely not shellfish….
