Welcome to our channel, where we explore cutting-edge technologies and solutions for cloud native applications! In this video, we delve into the power of Gloo Mesh, a revolutionary service mesh management platform, to facilitate seamless traffic management in multi-cluster deployments.
In our practical demonstration, we showcase the "bookinfo" application deployed across two Kubernetes clusters: "Cluster One" and "Cluster Two." Currently, we access the product page through the Ingress Gateway of Cluster One, achieved via a virtual Gateway and route table configuration.
To optimize our setup further, we take the next step and update the virtual Gateway to select both Ingress Gateways from both clusters. Additionally, we introduce the concept of "virtual destinations" – a way to group multiple services running across multiple clusters under an arbitrary hostname, "productpage.global." This virtual destination automatically includes product page services from the bookinfo front-end namespace in any cluster, making it highly flexible.
With Gloo Mesh, we effortlessly discover the product page services in both clusters and update the route table to route traffic through this new virtual destination. The result? An automatic round-robin behavior between the product page services on both clusters, thanks to Gloo Mesh's default behavior.
But wait, there's more! We demonstrate how to access the applications through either Cluster One or Cluster Two's Ingress Gateway, while still enjoying seamless traffic flow between the product page services.
The powerful Gloo UI allows us to visualize the intricate traffic flow between services in both clusters. By grouping services by cluster, we gain invaluable insights into how traffic flows between services, including the Ingress Gateways and product page services.
However, round-robin behavior might not always be the desired outcome. Gloo Mesh offers fine-grained control through policies, such as failover policies and outlier detection policies. With failover policies based on labels, we can prioritize local cluster access and only failover to remote clusters when needed. Outlier detection policies provide further control over when to initiate failover, based on error thresholds within specific time intervals.
Witness the failover capabilities in action as we simulate failures and experience the smooth transition between clusters. Even as we move services across clusters, Gloo Mesh automatically handles routing without impacting consumers, offering unparalleled flexibility.
Lastly, we explore the enhanced security and scalability of Gloo Mesh compared to upstream Istio's multi-cluster solutions. Gloo Mesh's agent efficiently discovers services and communicates with the management plane to create the necessary Istio resources automatically.
