STORYLINE:
Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan began talks on Sunday with Israeli leaders, causing raised eyebrows when he said he wanted details of an Israeli air raid last month on a Syrian target near the border with his country.
"During my visit to Israel I'm expecting an explanation of what happened, and why it happened," Babacan said during a joint news conference with the Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem.
Turkey has said it found fuel tanks allegedly dropped in its territory by Israeli warplanes during the September 6 raid, a development Babacan has called "unacceptable."
Israeli officials have maintained an unprecedented wall of silence over the affair and military censors have barred publication of any details, beyond the fact that Israel attacked a military target in Syria on September 6.
Foreign media reports, quoting unidentified US officials, have speculated that Israeli planes attacked a weapons shipment destined for Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, or hit a nuclear facility built with North Korean technology.
North Korea, which provides missile technology to Syria, has denied any nuclear link.
Syria also has denied receiving North Korean nuclear help.
The air operation heightened tensions between Israel and Syria, which Israel and the United States have repeatedly criticised for its support for Hezbollah and Palestinian militant groups and its close ties to Iran.
During the joint news conference with the Israeli president, Babacan described meetings in Syria earlier on Sunday as "very productive."
"I was happy to see that the government of Syria and the President of Syria playing a very constructive role in the region, and Syria, a country, being a part of (the) solution, not part of the problem," Babacan said, speaking alongside Shimon Peres.
Syria has said it will not attend the planned Mideast peace conference if it did not address Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights, which it captured from Syria during the 1967 Mideast war.
Turkish media had reported that Babacan was expected to play a mediatory role between Syria and Israel. His country maintains good relations with Israel.
