Die Wanderung startet im Talschluss vom größten Seitental vom Großarltal - im Ellmautal beim Parkplatz Grundlehen. Auf einem urigen Almsteig führt der Weg zuerst durch den Wald, dann über weite Almwiesen auf die Ellmaualm. Dabei kommen Sie an der Großellmau-Heimalm vorbei, die aber nicht bewirtschaftet ist.
Oben auf der Ellmaualm angekommen erwartet Sie nicht nur ein herrlicher Panoramablick bis hin zum Hochkönig, sondern auch eine sehr gute Jause mit selbstgemachten Köstlichkeiten wie Brot, Butter, Käse, Wurst oder Speck.
Aufstieg über herrliche Almwiesen auf den Bergkamm, danach Wanderung entlang des Grates zum Gründegg 2186m.
