While still in Gyumri we learnt that a Mount Azhdahak hike, organised by @wehike.am, was going to take place in a few days time. We contacted Ivan and arranged to join. Ivan suggested a nice camp spot where they would pick us up on the morning of the hike. This turned out to be a lovely spot right above the Geghard medieval monastery. Next to the spot was a sheltered picnic area with water. An Armenian family invited us for their bbq that evening. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The next morning we were picked up in Russian UAZ-452 Bukhanka’s. They took us to the start of the hike. The 2nd Bukanka had to stop a few times as its engine overheated on the way up. This was our first hike through serious sections of snow. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was kind for most of the way up. Once we reached the top, the weather turned sour. We had to make our way down the mountain quickly. Once much lower, the weather cleared and we saw beautiful vista’s again. The Bukanka’s picked us up and drove us to the site of some Dragon stones and petroglyphs. The hike finished with a nice joint meal (including Borscht). We said our goodbye’s as the others drove back to Yerevan. We drove down the mountain the next morning. Many thanks Ivan and Roma for taking care of us during this unique hike!
