Dr. Dan Duran, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Rowan University, speaks about how fields and younger forests are often undervalued compared to old growth forests, and therefore receive less protection. In fact, these open-canopy areas hold significantly more biodiversity than closed-canopy areas. Dr. Duran sketches some of the differences in these habitats, gives an overview of the conservation issues, and discusses ways that listeners can get involved in helping to create and maintain early successional forest and “edge” habitats.
This presentation was recorded live at the November 11, 2021 meeting of the Gloucester County Nature Club held at the Holy Nativity Lutheran Church in Wenonah, NJ.
