Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has welcomed the United Nations' decision to fire nine staff members from UNRWA after an internal investigation found the members may have been involved in the October 7 terror attack on Israel.
Mr Albanese was questioned during a media conference on Tuesday about whether Australia should have resumed funding for UNRWA given the recent findings from an internal investigation.
The federal government restored funding to UNRWA in March, around two months after allegations that at least a dozen employees had links to Hamas' deadly assault.
“Well they’ve taken action, that’s the point, UNRWA does vital work," Mr Albanese said.
“We resumed funding on the basis of the strong steps that had been taken to ensure that there was integrity in UNRWA operations.
“We paused those operations until we received those assurances that the integrity would be secured, and it is a good thing that the United Nations have taken this action.
“We know that the events of October 7 were appalling, and we unequivocally condemn them - as would all who value human life.”
