Recently Pacific Whale Foundation researchers have noticed a whale in Maui waters spending long periods of time at the surface with its flukes extended above the water’s surface. Our researchers recognized this behavior because the humpback whales we study in East Australia have been documented in the same posture. The whale with the extended flukes is a female humpback with a newborn calf and the mother is resting in this position while her calf nurses.
