Classics are celebrated over long periods of time. In fact, that is probably the one requirement for a movie to be called a classic. But sometimes it takes time for them to get celebrated too, like Aval Appadithaan, which didn't make heads turn for its first couple of years, but has since gone on to become Tamil cinema legend.
True to the classic that Aval Appadithaan is, we wanted the celebration to linger for some more time. Yes, we spoke about it as a film but to not speak about the movement it could have and should have spawned would be a crime. All people did was relegate it to an "inspired by French new wave" category, while it was a unique art piece that should have been a "Madras new wave" if we may. But still, the kanni effort of that A team of technicians so brilliantly encouraged by the A list stars of the time points to the fact that Aval Appadithan needs more OTT real estate. So here we go, remembering the origins, honouring the originality and celebrating the team that provided a true inspiration for many generations of filmmakers, critics and fans. Presenting: Aval Appadithaan part 2, our most prized creation to date....
