An Aeroflot plane on a domestic Russian flight made a fiery emergency landing at Moscow’s Sheremetevo Airport, killing as many as 13 people, according to Russian media.
Flight SU1492 to Murmansk, a Sukhoi Superjet, suffered an engine fire that forced it to return to Moscow, Aeroflot said in a statement. Russian news agencies said 73 passengers and five crew members were aboard.
Interfax said 13 people died according to a preliminary count. Another news agency, RIA Novosti, cited Health Ministry officials as confirming seven deaths.
Video on Russian broadcaster RT’s website showed the plane landing with its tail on fire and flames engulfing the rear after it came to a stop on the tarmac. Preliminary reports say the pilots declared an emergency before landing, according to RT.
The plane took off from Moscow at about 6 p.m., circled the capital region a few times and landed again about 40 minutes later, the Vedomosti newspaper said.
