Nombu Kanji is a nutritious porridge made with Rice, dal, veggies, fenugreek seeds and mutton/chicken cooked during the Ramadan month to break the fast in the evening. Traditionally Mutton Nombu Kanji is prepared in big container, then transferred to small bowls and distributed in all Masjids/Mosques across Tamil Nadu.

Vegetarian version of Nombu Kanji can also be made by skipping Mutton/Chicken and it tastes nothing less than the Non-Veg Nombu Kanji. Drumstick leaves can be added too as it is a rich source of Iron and also helps to treat mouth and stomach ulcer caused by long hours of fasting every day. This Nombu Kanji also helps to keep the body cool as Fenugreek seeds will help lower the body temperature.

💫 Use Raw Rice (Pachcharisi) to prepare Nombu Kanji as Boiled Rice (Puzhungal arisi) or New Rice (Pudhu arisi) gets cooked fast and become mushy.
💫 Add Coconut Milk only after you turn off the flame or else the Porridge will curdle.
💫 In case, if you find the Nombu Kanji becoming thick, add hot water to adjust its consistency.
