Jurisdictions across the Bay Area are trying to rid the region of sideshows. The informal, stunt driving gatherings have been around for over 40 years.
But a new ordinance in Alameda County would make it illegal for anyone to stand within 200 feet of one. Violators would face up to $1,000 in fines and three months in jail.
Police hope the new policy is a deterrent. But free speech advocates call it unconstitutional. They argue watching or documenting a sideshow is legally protected free speech.
Alameda County Board of Supervisors will consider the ordinance on July 11. If approved the new law would take effect August 10.
