When the conservators at the National Galleries of Scotland x-rayed Vincent van Gogh’s painting “Head of a Peasant Woman” in early July, they did not expect what they found. Hidden beneath layers of cardboard and glue on the reverse side of the painting was a previously unknown self-portrait of the famous van Gogh. After more than one century, it is almost impossible to believe that a painting that has been studied by thousands of people worldwide can still hold such exciting secrets. Van Gogh lived a troubled life, plagued by many mental illnesses, eventually committing suicide. And this is precisely why this discovery is so intriguing.
