Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams are extremely concerned about the conditions facing people displaced by a surge of violence in South Sudan, and the disruption of vital humanitarian aid caused by the new coronavirus pandemic. In this video, MSF field coordinator Håvard Høe warns that “more conflict might be coming” in this eastern region around Pibor town. MSF is trying to prepare for the threat of more violence, as well as for the potential spread of the coronavirus. South Sudan had reported four confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of April 14, however the wider impacts of the pandemic are already hampering operations. "It is hitting supply lines, it is hitting the movement of our staff," says Høe. "We fear that the needs we see here and now are becoming secondary in the eyes of the world." A recent outbreak of inter-communal violence in the east has pushed thousands of men, women, and children from their homes, and people have fled en masse to an area near the United Nations peacekeeping site in Pibor. MSF has set up an emergency project there to ensure medical care, and existing MSF facilities in Pibor and nearby Lankien and Pieri are also seeing high numbers of wounded patients. The violence has been brutal, says MSF nurse Regina Marko. "They attack women and kids, and also old men and old ladies, even if they cannot go to war. They come and they shoot them where they are."
