Ingredients
To Boil Dal and potatoes
Moong Dhal - 1/2 cup
Potatoes - 3
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Water
To Grind the masala paste
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Roasted gram - 2 Tablespoons
Poppy seeds - 1 teaspoon
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
Garlic - 6 cloves
Ginger - One inch
Green chillies – 10
Water
To prepare Kumbakonam Kadapa
Oil - 3 tbsp
Bay leaves
Cinnamon
Cloves
Cardamom
Star anise
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
Onion – 2 chopped
curry leaves
Tomato - 2 chopped
Salt - 1 tsp
Water
Chopped coriander leaves
Method
In a pressure cooker, mix two cups of water, half a cup of
moon dal, three potatoes cut into half, turmeric powder, salt,
cover the cooker and cook until five whistles.
When the cooker whistles, take the boiled potatoes separately
and peel the skin and mash it.
In a mixer jar, add half a cup of freshly grated coconut, two
table spoons of roasted gram, one teaspoon of poppy seeds,
one teaspoon of fennel seeds , six cloves of garlic, one piece
of chopped ginger, ten green chilies and water and grind it
well.
In a wide pan, pour three table spoons of oil, add bay leaves,
cinnamon , cloves, cardamom, Star anise, , chopped onions,
curry leaves, chopped two tomatoes and salt.
Add ground masala paste, pour some water and cover and let
it boil for five minutes.
When the mixture boils well, add the boiled dal, add some
water and let it boil again.

Now add mashed potatoes. Let it boil for ten minutes. Add
chopped coriander leaves and mix.
Kumbakonam Kadapa is ready to be served.
