Everyone develops "core beliefs" based on early experiences or traumatic situations. They are our most central ideas about ourselves, others, and the world and serve as a "lens" through which we view our lives.
Our beliefs reinforce our physiological/body patterns (procedural tendencies), and in turn, our body patterns reinforce our beliefs. In order to upgrade our beliefs so that they are more adaptive to our lives today, we need to also work with our body's procedural patterns.
In this video, Dr. May discusses the process of how core beliefs are formed and offers exercises to help us change them using directed mindfulness, somatic resources, and other Sensorimotor Psychotherapy techniques.
