This was our first time in Brașov, and we stayed for four weeks in this city. It is one of Romania’s most enchanting cities. In this 12 minute video, we take you along to explore the top sights and must see attractions of Brașov’s old town center and finish with a hike up Mount Tampa for the ultimate view of the city. It’s perfect for a first time visitor looking for travel tips and inspiration.
Our journey begins in Council Square (Piața Sfatului), the heart of Brasov’s Old Town. Surrounded by colorful historic buildings, this bustling square has been a gathering place for centuries. From here, we marvel at the Black Church (Biserica Neagră), a Gothic masterpiece and one of the most iconic landmarks in Romania. Its dramatic history, including surviving the great fire of 1689, makes it a must-see for visitors.
Next, we visit Catherine’s Gate (Poarta Ecaterinei), one of the oldest and most well-preserved gates in Eastern Europe. Built in 1827, this stunning landmark once served as the main entrance to Brașov, welcoming travelers and traders. What makes it so unique is its blend of Austrian, German, and Romanian architectural styles, reflecting Brașov’s past as a cultural crossroads. Nearby, we spot the city’s coat of arms—a crown atop a tree trunk with roots—and admire its intricate symbolism.
We also explore Strada Sforii, or Rope Street, the narrowest street in Eastern Europe. Originally built in the 15th century as a shortcut for firefighters, this quirky attraction features colorful graffiti and art on its walls. It’s a small but memorable stop that’s steeped in history.
Outside the Old Town walls, we take a peaceful stroll along the city’s defensive wall and visit the Drapers Bastion, a medieval structure originally entrusted to Brasov’s Goldsmith’s Guild and later to the Drapers Guild. This quiet area offers a glimpse into the city’s history and charm.
For the grand finale, we hike up Mount Tampa, which offers breathtaking views of Brasov and the surrounding Transylvanian countryside. The hike is moderately challenging, with dirt paths and rocky terrain, but the journey is worth it. Along the way, we share memories of our time in Romania, including encounters with mosquitoes and deer keds during a house sit in Bucharest. After about an hour of climbing, we reach the top, where we’re rewarded with panoramic views of Council Square, the Black Church, and beyond. It’s the perfect way to take in the beauty of Brasov.
To save time and energy, we take the cable car down Mount Tampa, which costs about $11 one way for both of us. The cable car is also called the Telecabina Tampa. This adventure-packed day highlights the rich history, charm, and natural beauty that make Brasov such a special destination.
Exploring Brașov on foot is the best way to experience its unique blend of history, culture, and stunning landscapes. We hope this video inspires you to get outside and explore Romania’s beauty.
