When you think of Lamborghinis, you probably think of sleek supercars with screaming V10 or V12 engines that turn heads and set hearts racing. What you probably don't think of is a diesel engine rolling coal as it passes you, but that's exactly what 1 Way Diesel Performance managed to cram into a 2004 Lamborghini Gallardo.
This incredible feat of engineering is one of the wildest engine swaps I have ever seen, and it's not hard to see why. After all, Lamborghinis are notoriously expensive and well-engineered, so not many people attempt to modify them. And when they do, it's usually just cosmetic changes or tweaks to the stock engine. But what 1 Way Diesel Performance did is truly next-level. And to some sacrilegious
But before we go to deep into this swop, lets first take a look at the Gallardo in its stock from and then we can go over all 1 way diesel performance did to their car. The Gallardo, in its stock form, is an impressive machine. It's powered by a 5.0-liter V10 engine that produces 493 horsepower (500 PS / 368 kW) and 376 lb-ft (510 Nm) of torque. Now by todays standards 500hp isn’t all the great so the folks at 1 Way Diesel Performance decided to swap it out the lambo V10 for a twin-turbo Cummins diesel straight-six. Now Me personally I would never do this, especially when I know how much power these V10’s can make with a twin turbo kit, but hay each to their own.
Now I have to say Before you start worrying that they ruined a perfectly good Lamborghini, it's worth mentioning that the car was totaled when 1 Way Diesel Performance acquired it. The car was a mess of smashed, twisted, and bent metal that was essentially destined for the scrap heap. But the team at 1 Way Diesel Performance saw something special in the car, and decided to breathe new life into it with their incredible engine swap.
The new engine is certainly an unconventional choice for a Lamborghini, but it's not hard to see why they went with it. The Cummins diesel is a reliable, powerful engine that's well-suited to high-performance applications. And with twin turbos, it's capable of producing even more power than the Gallardo's stock engine. And lets not forget, torque these cummins motors produce stupendous amounts of torque.
Of course, fitting a diesel engine into a Lamborghini isn't exactly a straightforward process. The Gallardo's engine bay was designed for an engine with 5 cylinders in legth, not six. So in order to make the it fit, 1 Way Diesel Performance had to cut the original firewall and re-fabricate a new one. It’s a classic really big dude, small woman situation it just wouldn’t fit. But despite the challenges, the end result is a clean, well-executed swap that doesn't intrude on the car's interior.
Speaking of the interior, it's been customized with a few touches that make it stand out from the stock Gallardo. The steering wheel, seats, dash, and gauge cluster have all been modified, giving the car a unique look and feel. The exterior has also been extensively modified, with a full widebody kit, a large wing, custom wheels, smoked taillights, and custom brake calipers with the 1 Way Diesel wordmark etched on them.
The power figures for the new engine aren't known, but it's safe to say that it's producing at least as much power as the stock V10. And despite the fact that it's a diesel engine, the car reportedly still feels light on its feet. That's due in part to the six-speed gated manual transmission, which maintains the engaging driving experience of the stock Gallardo. And according to manny this 6 speed gated manual is the best gearbox ever made.
So what do we make of this crazy engine swap? Is it sacrilegious to put a diesel engine in a Lamborghini? Or is it an inspired piece of engineering that shows what's possible when you think outside the box? i'll leave that for you to decide, but at least we all can agree that the car looks fricken awesome. And I think all of us that has worked on cars can respect the hard work that went into building this insane car.
