The Great Barrier Reef is home to a diverse ecological network. Recent research published in Nature reveals that water temperatures around the Great Barrier Reef have been the warmest in 400 years. This alarming trend, driven by human-induced climate change, has led to increased risks of mass coral bleaching and mortality.
The study, led by Benjamin Henley and colleagues, shows that since the 1980s, mass bleaching events have become more frequent due to rising temperatures. Their analysis indicates that the years 2016, 2017, 2020, 2022, and 2024 experienced some of the warmest sea surface temperatures on record.
