Ecuadorans on Sunday (31/05) began casting votes to replace a president who was declared insane, President Abdala Bucara, and forced to resign before completing his term in office. There is no clear front-runner in the race, and a runoff seems likely between the day's top vote getters. Quito's mayor Jamil Mahuad, millionaire Alvaro Noboa and journalist Freddy Ehlers are the leading candidates.
