On 6th January 2018, the Sanchi oil tanker collided with the cargo Crystal at 300 km off Shanghai,in the East China Sea.
The ship caught fire causing the death of the entire crew and the discharge of its oil products.
The strong Kuroshio Current and winds dragged oil spills along its flow toward the Japanese islands.
The oil spill contours can be detected using satellite imagery in the visible range and SAR (data source Copernicus & Aviso, analysis performed by CLS). The Finite Size Lyapunov Exponents (FSLE) provide the exponential rate of separation of particle trajectories initialized nearby and advected by altimetry velocities.
These high resolution FSLE are computed at 2 km resolution from optimized multimission altimetry maps.
When FSLE and the contours of the oil spills are superimposed, a consistency is observed between the path and shape of an oil spill and the position of the strong stretching areas underlined by FSLE values far from 0.
