Asafoetida (Ferula asafoetida) is a dried sap derived from Ferula plant roots.
While it is native to Afghanistan and Iraq, asafoetida is widely used in Indian cuisine, where it is dried, crushed into a spice, and known as hing.
What is Hing?
Asafoetida is a sulfurous-smelling gum-resin derived from the Furula plant. It is usually crushed into a powder and used as a spice to give a savory taste to food or for its purported therapeutic properties.
As well as being used to flavor food, asafoetida has been utilized for millennia across the world for its purported health advantages.
Hing is cited in numerous scientific publications in our far western culture for its therapeutic qualities.
The root extract has powerful antibiotic, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial chemicals, and scientists believe that the hing extract may be utilized to prevent and cure the swine flu (H1N1) virus.
It was also employed to battle the 1918 Spanish influenza epidemic.
Some notable benefits of Hing:
- High in antioxidants
- May aid with digestion
- May help with IBS symptoms
- Has antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties
- Aids in blood pressure reduction
- Has anti-cancer properties
- Preserve brain health
- Assist in the relief of asthma symptoms
- Assist in lowering blood sugar levels
Hing (Asafoetida)'s Potential Adverse Effects:
While research on the safety of asafoetida in humans is limited, small quantities of asafoetida used in cooking are believed to be safe for most people.
In one human research, 250 mg twice daily for 30 days was well tolerated by the subjects.
However, animal studies indicate that high dosages of asafoetida may induce mouth swelling, gas, diarrhea, anxiety, and headaches. Furthermore, mouse research shows that dosages larger than 455 mg per pound (1,000 mg per kg) of body weight may be toxic.
Furthermore, owing to a paucity of research, asafoetida is not advised for pregnant or nursing women or young children.
People with blood pressure or on blood-thinning medicines should avoid taking asafoetida supplements since it may decrease blood pressure or thin the blood.
If you have any questions or concerns, it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider before trying asafoetida.
