Since there are so many factors involved with the serve in tennis, it's very easy to become overwhelmed and lose control of your serve.
That's precisely why we've created this step by step serve lesson to follow.
In this free tennis lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will share the 6 simple secrets to a great tennis serve.
How To Serve In Tennis:
The Ideal Grip To Serve With - The foundation of any tennis player's serve is the grip. This is the way you hold the tennis racket. A very common mistake is to serve with a forehand grip, usually the eastern or semi-western. This will limit your potential on the serve and reduce the amount of power and spin you can create. We recommend using a continental grip to serve with in tennis. The continental grip allows to use supination and pronation on your tennis serve which will help you create power, control and the various spins you'll need.
Perfecting The Ball Toss - An erratic ball toss will cost you many points in tennis matches, simply because you'll lose the timing on your serve. A consistent ball toss is key to having a great tennis serve. The two most common mistakes with the ball toss are tossing the ball too high and holding the ball in the palm of the hand. We recommend holding the tennis ball in your fingers, so you can feel the ball better and it makes it much easier to place the ball in the correct zone.
Think about placing the ball, as opposed to throwing the ball.
Tennis Serve Swing Make Simple - Now that we have the ideal grip and you know how to control your ball toss, it's all about the way you swing the tennis racket on your serve. There are a few different techniques that you can use to reach an ideal power position. You can use the full racket drop swing, which is the method Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic use. You can use a half swing, similar to Rafael Nadal, or you can use the abbreviated swing like Andy Roddick and Gael Monfils. Whichever method you use, the key is to reach the ideal power position.
The Trophy Position On Serve - Imagine you wanted to throw a tennis ball. You'd get into a power position, which would look very similar to the tennis serve power position. From the throwing position, we can generate a lot of power, simply because we're using the throwing action on the tennis serve. Some of the key focus points for the trophy position on serve are making sure you bend the hitting elbow, have the tossing hand pointing upwards towards the ball, have a good knee bend and keep the head up to track the target, the ball.
Pronation On The Tennis Serve - From the power position, if you're using the continental grip and have a relaxed shoulder, the racket will drop down and then start to rise up towards the ball with the edge of the racket leading the way. In slow motion, it would look as though you were going to hit the ball with the frame. Then the forearm starts to pronate and the racket opens up towards the court. After the point of contact, the racket will then turn outwards and the arm will fully pronate.
This motion during the strike zone allows you to accelerate and control the direction of the serve.
Tennis Serve Follow Through and Finish - The last step is now to finish your serve in a relaxed way which will reduce the risk of injury. Ideally, you'll pronate the arm fully and start to bend the elbow, which will take the stress off the shoulder. The racket will then finish close to your left pocket if you're right-handed. This relaxed finish allows the body to slow down the racket head speed in a safe way.
