(17 Jul 2021) Thousands of residents from the southern Dutch cities of Bunde, Voulwames, Brommelen and Geulle were allowed to return home on Saturday morning after being evacuated on Thursday and Friday due to severe flooding.
Caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte's government has declared the flooding a state of emergency, opening up national funds for those affected.
Wiel de Bie, a 75-year-old resident from Brommelen assessed the damage on Saturday morning while pumping water out of his basement.
He kept copies of magazines dating back decades, as well as photo albums and other valuable documents in his basement.
Further down the street, the Kant family returned to their house for the first time since evacuating.
Ijmert Kant said he was grateful that his only losses were material items as he surveyed the damage in his home.
"If you look at Belgium and Germany where people really drowned, collapsed houses, that's of a different order," he said.
