"Nigeria is a country in that, no matter how bad the situation is, we always find time to enjoy the moment. Through my paintings I’m also doing that because I’m creating a safe environment for these figures to be.” - Wahab Saheed
In his first London solo exhibition, Wahab Saheed uses portraiture to explore notions of nationality and identity. On This Field of Green is founded in Saheed’s own relationship to his native Nigeria. The colour green appears as the constant thread that weaves throughout this body of work, framing each figure in bright and vivid tones. As the key colour in the Nigerian flag, green symbolises the wealth and richness of the country’s natural resources. For Saheed, the colour green also carries significance in the context of mass migration, as young Nigerians leave their country to search for greener pastures abroad.
Wahab Saheed (b.1998) was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He graduated from the prestigious Yaba College of Technology with a Higher Diploma in Painting in 2019. He has participated in and won the Alibaba Drawing Competition of 2020. Recent solo exhibitions include Birthdays are Special, Bill Brady Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2022) and Some Days Are Diamond, Nanzuka Underground, Tokyo, Japan (2021). Recent group exhibitions include Stockholm Sessions with Carl Kostyál, Stockholm, Sweden (2021).
