"The leaders, the first guys through the door always get shot. So pay attention, Kaʻala 'cause in a 6-man stack, if you're Number One, you're gonna get hit."
Man, this guy, his name was Corky, he had my attention let me tell you.
We were practicing clearing a room for an airsoft game, kind of like a paintball challenge but with plastic bbs, and it was a pretty adrenaline-filled time. We were all pumped!
"Who wants to be the One?" he asked our team.
"Ah," I had to ask, "Does Six get shot a lot?"
"Yeah. He does."
"OK. I'll be Three."
Who really wants to the first person through the door knowing that there are guys on the other side ready, willing and excited to shoot at you with hard plastic bbs?? Who wants to be the leader of THAT knowing that you're the shield for everyone else?
Corky was a Force Recon marine who had done this stuff for real out in the middle-east. He was showing the youth group for our church this kind of stuff at a fun activity.
The question is even more serious for him in Afghanistan.
Who wants to be first through the door when they're shooting REAL bullets?
This is related to my question for lots of young people who tell me they want to be leaders. I always ask, first question all the time: Why?Leaders get shot. It hurts, it's not all fun and games.
Why would you want that?
Years ago a guy came to me wanting to volunteer as a youth leader.
"Great!" I said. "We need help putting the chairs away tonight."
"No. Uh, actually I want to be a leader."
"Oh. A "leader." Well, that's awesome. Can you grab some of those chairs and out them in the closet?"
"I don't think you understand, Kaala. I'm not wanting to put chairs away. I'm wanting to lead the youth!"
"I don't think YOU understand. Being a leader IS putting chairs away. And sweeping and cleaning toilets. First and foremost leadership is service."
That was years ago but the perception that leadership is somehow the corner office "cool kid" thing to do is still going on today. Leadership is a first through the door SERVANT thing to do.
Biblical leadership is sacrificial leadership. Jesus said that he didn't come to BE served but TO serve.
Paul says in Romans that
"...in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently..." (Romans 12:5--8)
The best reason and answer to the question of why you want to be a leader is because you have to, because you're called to. Because it's what God wants from you, it's a gift from him and that's what he made you to do.
