Will and I visited 20 U.S. Colleges and Universities in two weeks. This was our 18th stop, Pomona College. Pomona is private and the smallest college we visited with just 1,777 students. It often competes with Williams and Amherst as the best private liberal arts in the country, and thus its admissions are also very selective. The classes are small, with many having fewer than 10 students in them. 58% of the students engage in research with faculty during their time there. Pomona’s weather is fantastic and the mountains just above Claremont mean that in the winter you might ski in the morning and then drive to one of the Los Angeles beaches in the afternoon. Students live on campus in one of 16 residence halls and there are special initiatives for first-year students, such as a trip with a small number of students before classes begin to the mountains or to go to rock climbing, and also being assigned to a “sponsor group” of 15 students who live in your residence hall.
