Ukrainian border guards have hailed a new border post on Snake Island, a location that became infamous in the early days of the conflict.
The border post, painted in the blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag, was erected to ‘remind Russia that territory is Ukrainian’.
The island drew attention during the early months of the conflict after Russia took control of it just two days after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Borders guards on the island had been instructed to ‘surrender or die’ by an approaching Russian warship. However, the guards’ response and refusal to surrender to Russian forces has since become a symbol of resistance for Ukraine in its war campaign.
